If you want to shed a few pounds, or if you are trying to maintain your weight, eating foods with no carbohydrates will help. Doctors may prescribe a diet of no or low carbohydrates for patients who need to control their blood sugar. There are many non-carb foods to choose from.
Meats and Vegetables
Many meats have no to low amounts of carbohydrates. Beef, pork and lamb are excellent meats to eat and contain little to no carbohydrates. Roasted lamb loin has no carbohydrates and is rich in proteins and amino acids. Processed meats such as sausage or bacon, should be avoided as they can have added sugars and starches. Not all vegetables are low in carbohydrates. Leafy vegetables such as spinach and lettuce are good choices as well as celery, asparagus and mushrooms. Potatoes, however, are high in carbohydrates.
Poultry and Fish
Chicken, turkey, duck and goose have little to no carbohydrates. They are also a great source for protein. For a no-carbohydrate diet, avoid deep frying poultry. Salmon, halibut, tuna, trout, swordfish and sardines are just a few of the fish that have no carbohydrates. It is best to grill or bake the fish. Steamed shrimp, lobster and clams are also good for diets low in carbs.
Dairy, Fruits and Liquids
There are many dairy products that do not contain carbohydrates. Eggs, for example, do not contain carbs and are rich in protein and amino acids. Hard-cooked eggs and egg whites are best for a no-carb diet. Whether you choose to use salted or unsalted butter, it too is carb free, however, it has a high percentage of fat. Not all cheese is low in carbohydrates. A few good cheese choices are Monterey Jack, cheddar, Parmesan and muenster. Unfortunately, most fruits do contain carbohydrates with the exception of the olive. One of the healthiest liquids to drink with zero carbohydrates is water. Tea or coffee with no milk or sugar added are also carb free. Most alcohol contains carbohydrates, but a few non-carb choices are vodka, bourbon and gin.
