Which Types of Grapefruit Are the Sweetest?

Originally named the "forbidden fruit," grapefruits originated in subtropical climates. There are three types of grapefruit: white, pink and ruby red. While the skin is typically anywhere from yellow to orange, the inside of the fruit changes in color depending on the citrus pigmentation.     White grapefruits get their name from the white to pale yellow color of the fruit. With a thick yellow peel, they are oblong shaped and flat at the top and bottom. They have been known as a cleanser for the digestive system and promote healthy skin. While they have a robust sweetness to taste, their underlying tanginess makes them the least sweet variety.

    Red grapefruit is also known as the Red Marsh grapefruit or Red Ruby grapefruit, and gets its name from the bright reddish/pink color of its fruit. Its rind is relatively smooth and has a yellow blush color. This is the sweetest type of grapefruit with little to no bitterness. As one of the most popular citrus fruits, the ruby red is full of vitamins A and C and typically grows from November to May in Florida and Texas, but can adapt to a variety of soils and is relatively drought resistant, which makes it a popular choice for gardens. Ruby Red's can also be stored at room temperature so they last about a week on the counter or up to eight weeks in the refrigerator.

    Pink grapefruits are a hybrid of red and white grapefruits, giving them their pink color. As a blend of the red and white grapefruits, they tend to be less sugary and have a more bitter and tart taste. This is why they are normally eaten with sugar or brown sugar sprinkled on top. Pink grapefruits are also excellent for your health. The bulk of pink grapefruits are produced in Texas and Florida during winter months, and in California and Arizona in spring and summer months.

Grapefruit and Medication

    While grapefruits are an excellent source of vitamins and antioxidants and their sweet and tangy juiciness can be the perfect breakfast addition, consult your physician if you are taking any prescription medication before adding grapefruit to your diet, as it may increase the levels of the medication.
