Weight Loss Programs for Kids' Gyms

Weight Loss Programs for Kids' Gyms

Obesity in children has reached an alarming number. According to the Center for Disease Control and Prevention, in 2003 to 2006, childhood obesity has increased dramatically, numbers that have doubled since the 1976 to 1980 National Health and Nutrition Examination Survey. Two major causes of childhood obesity are lack of exercise and poor nutrition, and for this reason, many gyms are adding weight loss programs for kids to stop this trend. Adding children's exercise programs to your gym is simple and rewarding, because of the effect they will have on a child's quality of life.

Personal Training

One weight loss program for kids' gyms is a personal training program. The gym may already have smaller, child sized strength training and workout equipment, but a child may not know how to use this equipment. This can cause intimidation and discourage them from exercising. By offering short- or long-term personal training programs, children can become familiar with how to use the equipment efficiently and safely.

Aerobic Classes

Children, much like adults, are under the false impression that exercise can't be fun. For this reason, it is helpful to offer fun weight loss programs for kids that allow them to have fun and get fit. Dance classes are a great way to motivate kids, and burn calories and fat at the same time. Another aerobic class idea that kids will enjoy is kickboxing. They will love learning the kickboxing moves of their favorite action hero, and it is also be a great cardio workout as well.

Olympics

A fun, long-term weight loss program for kids is to help them train for an Olympics, large obstacle course, or relay race. Healthy competition will keep them motivated, especially if a prize or major ceremony is involved. The program can run for any time span, although you want the training period to allow enough time for the kids to establish a routine and truly get in shape. You can also incorporate a weight loss competition into this, and have a final weigh in, with a prize going to the team, or individual, with the highest weight loss. However, remember to equally encourage and praise those who don't win for their accomplishments as well.

Nutrition Classes

Though child gyms mainly focus on the physical aspect of weight loss, it is also important for kids and parents to learn the importance of a healthy diet as a major component of their weight loss. Your gym can offer nutrition classes for parents and students, so they can understand how to eat healthy meals. Another idea is to offer cooking classes for parents and students, providing kids with easy, healthy snack ideas. This will also teach them how to help their parents cook healthy meals as well.
