Grapefruit is packed with vitamin C and the antioxidant lycopene and it does not require any preparation -- other than peeling or slicing in half -- so you can enjoy it anytime you like. If you find grapefruit to be too sour to eat by itself, then add it to salads or zest the rind into your favorite dishes. A grapefruit half topped with some sugar or artificial sweetener also makes a nutritious and tasty addition to a healthy breakfast. Add this to my Recipe Box.
Instructions
Peel and Eat
- 1
Wash the fruit under cool water. Pat the fruit dry with a towel.
2Peel the fruit beginning at the top of the rind. Remove the entire rind but not the white surrounding membrane.
3Pull the fruit apart by poking your fingers in the top opening and tugging. Peel away the sections and eat them.
Slice and Sugar
- 4
Rinse the grapefruit and dry it with a towel. Lay the grapefruit on a cutting board. Position the navel or top of the fruit to the left and the bottom of the fruit facing right.
5Slice the grapefruit in half with a large knife. Place the grapefruit halves in the bowls. Sprinkle the tops of the fruit with sugar or artificial sweetener if you like.
6Spoon out the sugared grapefruit one bite at a time. You can also use a grapefruit spoon that is designed especially for eating grapefruit easily.
Make a Salad
- 7
Whisk 3 1/2 tsp. white grape juice, 2 1/2 tsp. apple cider vinegar and 2 tbsp. lemon juice in a small mixing bowl.
8Mix 2 tbsp. minced shallot into the grape juice, vinegar and lemon juice mixture until well combined.
9Whisk 1/4 cup walnut oil and 1/4 cup olive oil into the mixture and season the dressing with sea salt and pepper, if desired.
10Arrange the lettuce leaves on a plate. Top with avocado slices and grapefruit segments. Drizzle the dressing over the top.
