Exercise and weight loss programs populate television commercials, bookstore shelves, magazine racks and websites. With so many to choose from, how can you be sure you're making the right decision? Investing in an exercise and weight loss program is a serious choice that demands commitment. If you want results, get clear on your goals first and choose your weight loss program second.

    Prioritize your fitness goals. Decide whether you want to lose more fat, build more muscle or gain better conditioning. According to leading strength coaches Jason Ferruggia and Tom Venuto, you can't do all three of these things optimally at the same time.

    Read free literature offered by each exercise and weight loss program. With most online programs, a pamphlet, booklet or other introductory literature will be offered to give you an overview. Eliminate programs that aren't targeted to your specific goals.

When training for size, programs must be designed to help you learn to lift heavy weights for low sets and repetitions. When training for conditioning, the program must focus on having you perform exercises that target endurance.

    Compare the programs in question to your basic understanding of nutrition and exercise. Eliminate programs that make false or outlandish claims, such as "Lose 20 pounds of fat in three weeks with no diet."
